UMBRAL

CLO3D, Cotton Polyester, Snaps

Umbral was made using CLO3D as a tool for pattern making, clothing simulation, and rendering. In Suturis, I really enjoyed learning how to pattern make in CLO3D. I made a halter top, which was a simpler piece to construct. That experience got me excited about the possibilities of digital design and pattern making. Instead of making a wearable for myself or women, a category I am comfortable with, I made a men’s garment.

In discussion about sensory experiences, we talked a lot about how much we as people rely on visual cues, where sight is the dominant sense. I thought it would be interesting to almost minimize the visual aspect a bit. I used black as the fabric color because when you work with single colored objects, especially black and white (end of the spectrum), texture and layering become super important to differentiate different parts of the design. In this shirt, the details might not be immediately obvious until you interact with it, wear it, or see it under specific lighting conditions. The garment itself reveals more upon interaction.
